Amber Newton, MSW, RSW

Clinical Specialist | EMDR Therapist | Certified in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & EMDR

Reaching out for therapy can feel like a big step—especially when what you are carrying feels heavy, complicated, or difficult to put into words. Many people come to therapy after spending a long time managing on their own, continuing to meet responsibilities while feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected beneath the surface.

I provide therapy for individuals ages 17 and older navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, post-traumatic stress, chronic pain, life transitions, relationship challenges, parenting concerns, infertility, reproductive trauma, and grief and loss. I also support Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, and individuals seeking gender-affirming care assessments.

Therapy is a collaborative process. Together, we create space to better understand your experiences, process what has shaped you, and develop practical tools to help you feel more grounded, connected, and able to move forward.

My goal is to offer a compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental space where you can be understood as a whole person—not just through the challenges you are facing, but through your strengths, relationships, experiences, and the values that matter most to you.

About Me

I am a Registered Social Worker and Clinical Specialist with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers. I hold a Master of Social Work from York University, a Bachelor of Social Work from Toronto Metropolitan University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Toronto.

I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. My practice integrates evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual's unique experiences, strengths, and goals.

My professional experience spans private practice, hospital-based mental health services, community mental health, addictions, and child and family services. In addition to my private practice, I work within Nova Scotia's public mental health system, providing assessment, early intervention, and therapeutic support for children, adolescents, and families. Earlier in my career, I worked in intensive addiction treatment and supportive housing, providing individual, group, and family therapy for individuals experiencing substance use, trauma, and complex mental health concerns. This breadth of experience has strengthened my ability to support people through a wide range of challenges while recognizing that every person's story is unique.

At the heart of my work is the belief that our experiences do not occur in isolation. The ways we think, feel, relate to others, and respond to life's challenges are shaped by our relationships, early experiences, identities, cultures, communities, and the broader social systems in which we live. My perspective has also been enriched by living in Europe and Asia for more than six years, experiences that deepened my appreciation for diverse worldviews and reinforced the importance of approaching every person's story with curiosity, cultural humility, and respect. These experiences continue to inform my commitment to understanding each client within the context of their unique lived experience rather than through assumptions or labels.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in attachment theory, the neurobiology of trauma, and an understanding of how identity, culture, relationships, and systemic influences shape our mental health and well-being. Rather than asking, "What's wrong with you?" I believe the more meaningful question is, "What has happened to you, and how has your experiences shaped the way you see yourself, others, and the world?" Together, we work to understand patterns that may once have served an important purpose but no longer support the life you want to live.

I view therapy as a collaborative process of developing insight, processing difficult experiences, and building practical skills for everyday life. My goal is to help you heal from the past without remaining defined by it, cultivate greater presence and self-compassion in the here and now, and move forward with intention and confidence. While we cannot control the future or the actions of others, we can strengthen our capacity to respond thoughtfully, make choices that align with our values, and create healthier relationships with ourselves and those around us. Ultimately, I hope clients leave therapy not only feeling better equipped to navigate life's challenges, but also with a deeper understanding of themselves and a renewed sense of connection, resilience, and possibility.
